Like a Flower / Como La Flor: Hearing the Heart of God

By Coach Lori Lopez – Seeing Stars

I spend my days surrounded by little ones. As an Early Education Director and Teacher, I get a front-row seat to the wonder of childhood. I love the way children speak with honesty, never worrying how their words will land. But my favorite thing is their unlimited curiosity. They see the world as a place to explore, ask endless questions, and soak up every answer like sunlight.

When I first began experiencing the Lord supernaturally, I approached Him the same way—with childlike faith and curiosity. I asked Him everything. And often, He would answer in ways that were unexpected, tender, and thought-provoking.

One night, I had an encounter that reminded me why Jesus calls us to come to Him like a child (Matthew 18:3).

A Question Before the Lord

I was lying in bed, the house quiet, when I felt the atmosphere shift. Everything grew still—so still that I could hear every inhale and exhale of my own breath.

In that stillness, a thought dropped into my heart:“I wonder what eight billion people sound like to God, all breathing at once, along with the animals and even the plants He created?”

I imagined the sound from Heaven’s throne and thought, “It must be so loud to Him.”

I’ve learned that when the Holy Spirit gives me a question like that—often at night—it’s an invitation to lean in. Scripture tells us to take every thought captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). So, in that stillness the Bible calls us to (Psalm 4:4), I whispered a prayer:“Lord, what does our breathing sound like to You?”

A Song in the Stillness

As I waited quietly, eyes closed, body still, I suddenly heard two girls giggling and singing “Como La Flor” by Selena—like karaoke night with laughter sprinkled in.

At first, I just smiled. I love that song. But then the Holy Spirit nudged my heart: This is significant.

I wrote it down in my journal and went to sleep, knowing He would unfold the meaning in the morning.

When I woke up and returned to my journal, the meaning began to bloom. The song the girls were singing is bittersweet. It’s a song of loss and longing, not joy. And yet they were laughing as they sang.

Then I understood what the Lord was showing me:

The Groaning of Creation

When God hears the breath of His creation—eight billion lives inhaling and exhaling—He doesn’t just hear sound. He feels our groans.

Romans 8:22–24 tells us:

“For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope, we are saved.”

God sees His beloved creation—the bride He loves—struggling, longing, and at times, far from Him. Our breath, our lives, our collective existence can sound like that bittersweet song to Him: laughter covering loss, joy covering pain.

But He doesn’t leave us in our groaning.

The Flower of His Love

The song’s title, “Como La Flor” (Like a Flower), reminded me that God’s love is like a bloom that never fades. He already gave all the love He could give when He sent His Son:

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17

Even as creation groans, His love calls us back. He waits for us to return, to trade our sorrow for His joy, to let our breath become praise instead of pain.

Friend, Be Still Today

If you’ve been moving through life carrying hidden grief, silent groans, or unspoken longings, God hears them all. He knows the sound of your breath. He longs for you to come close, like a curious child, and simply ask Him what’s on your heart.

Be still today. Ask Him your questions. And let Him turn your groans into songs of redemption.
