How to Prepare for a Spiritual Hurricane

By Coach Lori Lopez – Seeing Stars

Living in Texas, we know that hurricanes don’t come every year—but when they do, they can shake everything in their path. Long before the storm makes landfall, we prepare board up windows, stock up on supplies, and make sure our homes are secure.

Life is no different. We all face seasons I call “spiritual hurricanes”—those fierce storms of life that threaten to rattle our faith, shake our homes, and test our hearts. Maybe for you, it’s a health battle, a financial strain, a strained relationship, or the weight of raising children in a world that feels upside down. These storms can leave us feeling exposed and unprepared—unless we’ve built our spiritual homes to withstand the winds.

Today, let’s walk through three ways to prepare your heart and home for life’s spiritual hurricanes.

1. Check Your Foundation

When a real hurricane is approaching, people in mobile homes are told to evacuate. They know the wind can rock and destroy a house without a solid foundation. Spiritually, the same is true.

Jesus is our unshakable foundation.

“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 3:11

If your life feels like it’s built on shifting sand—running from storm to storm—today is your chance to come to Him fully. Surrendering your life to Jesus is the first step in building a home that will not fall, no matter how strong the winds blow.

2. Storm-Proof Your Home

In a physical storm, we walk our property, looking for weak spots. We secure loose items, board up windows, and seal doors.

Spiritually, we do the same by examining our lives:

  • Where are the weak spots?

  • What sins or habits give the enemy a way into our home?

  • Are we guarding what we watch, listen to, and speak over our family?

Our eyes, ears, and mouths are the windows and doors to our spiritual house. If we don’t guard them, storms can easily breach our walls.

“He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly… who stops his ears from hearing of blood and shuts his eyes from seeing evil; he shall dwell on high; his place of defense shall be the fortress of rocks.” – Isaiah 33:15-16

Repentance is like boarding the windows—turning away from the things that weaken us and choosing to live in holiness through God’s grace.

3. Stock Up on Spiritual Supplies

Before a hurricane, we collect food, water, flashlights, batteries—supplies to keep us nourished and safe.

Our spiritual house also needs supplies:

  • The Word of God – our daily bread

  • Prayer – our lifeline to the Holy Spirit

  • Worship and fellowship – keeping our light burning in the dark

Psalm 145 reminds us that God is our ultimate provider:

“The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due season. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.” – Psalm 145:15-16

When storms come, the world may go dark, but a home filled with the Word, prayer, and the presence of Jesus will shine like a beacon.

Friend, Start Building Today

Spiritual hurricanes don’t wait for permission, and they don’t only affect us—they shake our children, marriages, and families. But we don’t have to be afraid.

Jesus is our safe place. He is our light in the darkness and our anchor in every storm.

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” – Psalm 145:18-19

If your heart is stirring as you read this, don’t wait for the winds to pick up. Call on Jesus today. Build your home on Him. Strengthen your walls with righteousness. Stock your heart with His Word and presence.

Then, when the storms come—and they will—you’ll stand firm, not in fear, but in faith.
